The Sandwich of Capacity

For educators in schools and home education

When capacity is low, thinking, patience, and words often go offline – for learners and for educators.

The Sandwich of Capacity is a free interactive tool, with a simple downloadable guide, designed to help educators make sense of big reactions, shutdown, and “short fuse” moments in learning spaces – gently and without blame.

It helps you understand what the nervous system is doing, how pressure affects behaviour and learning, and why some moments (and conversations) feel impossible in the moment – supporting PHSE/PSHE, inclusion, and your own regulation too.

Free. Gentle. Use at your own pace.

The Sandwich of Capacity supports educators to:

  • explain emotions and behaviour through the nervous system, in simple language

  • teach self-regulation and co-regulation in PHSE without pathologising

  • recognise when learners’ capacity is squeezed – and adjust expectations

  • build shared classroom language around pressure, capacity, and support

  • respond earlier, before escalation or shutdown

This is not behaviour management.
It’s behaviour understanding.

Educators in schools and home education settings

This resource is for educators who are holding a lot.

  • Classroom teachers supporting learners with big emotions, shutdown, or overwhelm

  • Home educators navigating learning alongside regulation and connection

  • Educators teaching PHSE / PSHE, emotional wellbeing, or relationships

  • SEND-aware and inclusive practitioners looking for non-blaming language

  • Educators noticing behaviour escalate when pressure increases

  • Educators who feel emotionally tired, overstimulated, or close to burnout themselves

It’s especially helpful if:

  • traditional behaviour strategies aren’t working

  • talking and reasoning go offline for learners

  • you want a way to explain emotions and behaviour without shame

  • you need something that works for neurodivergent older children and teens, not just younger pupils

It also supports you as an educator. This tool isn’t only for learners.

It helps you:

  • notice when your capacity is running low

  • understand your own short fuse or emotional fatigue

  • recognise early signs of burnout

  • identify what helps restore capacity (what to reduce, what to add)

  • stay steadier in the room when things feel intense

Regulation is contagious – and educators’ nervous systems matter too.
